project brief:

The NHS Integrated Care Board for Bedfordshire, Luton & Milton Keynes needed a new website to aid their GPs in finding relevant information on the range of drugs available to them and also to keep them updated with news across the different sites via their newsletters.

project planning:

The planning phase included the design of a comprehensive sitemap, the determination of required page templates, and the decision to utilise a Bootstrap-based framework.

Sitemap Planning

The first step in the project planning was the development of a detailed sitemap. This involved extensive consultation with the client to understand their business objectives, target audience, and desired user experience. The sitemap served as a visual blueprint, illustrating the structure and hierarchy of the website. This hierarchical structure ensured that users could navigate the site intuitively.

Page Templates

Once the sitemap was finalised, the next step was to determine the specific page templates required. Each section of the website needed distinct templates to cater to its unique content and functionality. For instance, the Home page required dynamic sign-posting to all the various areas of the site, as well as displaying the document library. The individual area pages needed a template that could showcase detailed descriptions of the sector, links to all of the relevant documents within that sector and contact information.

Framework and Technical Planning

The choice of framework was a critical decision in the project planning phase. After evaluating various options, I opted for a framework built around Bootstrap. Bootstrap was chosen for its responsive design capabilities, extensive pre-built components, and ease of customisation. This framework ensured that the website would be mobile-friendly and provide a consistent user experience across different devices and screen sizes.

I mapped out the technical requirements and planned the integration of Bootstrap with WordPress. This involved setting up a child theme to maintain the integrity of the original theme while allowing for customisations. The child theme was designed to leverage Bootstrap’s grid system, typography, and components, ensuring that all custom templates were both visually appealing and functionally robust.

project conclusion:

I created a bespoke WordPress website for them which enables them to upload their latest news in an easy to understand manner and also created an indexable and searchable document library viewable on the front end for ease of use to find the exact document they are looking for.
